Held at the Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin, FIE's final 20th Anniversary celebration and reception recognized the Devocation of our inaugural group of First Year Forward students. New in 2018, First Year Forward (FYF) is FIE's signature brand for first-year programs in London and Dublin.
As well as the Devocation for First Year Forward, the event was also part of the FIE Academic Advisory Council meetings and the final 20th anniversary event for FIE partners and colleagues in Dublin.
Senior Vice President of Operations, John M. Pearson, opened the evening with inspirational remarks directed to the First Year Forward students:
"This experience has no doubt been a disruptive one for all of you, and that is a good thing - we learn most from disruptive experiences. To quote Irish writer Oliver Goldsmith, "Success consists of getting up just one more time than we fall."
Resident Director of FIE Dublin, Karl Dowling, and FYF convener Leo Darcy thanked the students for their participation in this semester's FYF module which included a common read and volunteer events. FYF students from Elon University, Marist College, and College of Charleston then presented their reflections on their Ireland experience to the wider group, through the lens of FIE's values: Social Justice, Sustainability, and Diversity & Inclusivity.
Afterward, students and guests alike were treated to a reception in the Science Gallery balcony area complete with live Irish music, nibbles, and another fantastic FIE cake! It was a truly special evening, bringing together our partners, students, and Academic Advisory Council. What a perfect way to round out 2018.
Thank you so much to everyone who attended one (or more!) of our receptions this year. We couldn't do what we do without you, and it was special to be able to acknowledge the excellent working relationship we have with so many colleagues and associates. As we reflect on the past 20 years, we also look forward to creating new memories and new creative solutions in collaboration with our partners for the next generation of global leaders.
Since 1998 FIE: Foundation for International Education has grown from a small, one-site operation with thirty students, two partner universities and three full-time staff, to the multi-site operation with 50+ partner universities and colleges we see today. Most importantly we couldn’t provide the support to the future world leaders that walk through our doors without the dedication and hard work of our Dublin, London, and US staff and faculty.
Thank you to the Twentieth Anniversary Task Force for working so hard to make all of the 2018 celebrations so successful.
