At FIE, we are dedicated to being actively engaged with and aware of our environmental impact and responsibilities. As such, we are committed to a sustainable future, to ethical consumption and to creating social, environmental and economical well-being in our immediate and global community.

MISSION FOR SUSTAINABILITY

As an educational organization, FIE is dedicated to active engagement with, and awareness of, our environmental impacts and responsibilities. FIE is committed to fostering a sustainable future by implementing initiatives to encourage practices such as ethical consumption, fair trade and education of those within our community. We will continually research methods of improving upon current practices, policies and procedures.

Key Elements

Sustainability Action Group

This standing committee of FIE staff and faculty works to promote sustainability issues and raise awareness throughout the entire FIE community. Organizational advocacy has led to initiatives including but not limited to strategic policy development, comprehensive recycling programs, energy-efficient facility upgrades, and student energy-saving residential competitions.

Environmental Initiative Route, Sharif Rahman Scholarship

Merit scholarships are available in all FIE locations in memory of FIE’s founder. The Environmental Initiative Route is one of three options. Students receiving this scholarship will execute an environmental service or research project of their own creation, with the full support of the Sustainability Action Group.

Environment and Sustainable Development Lecture Series

The theme of sustainability is addressed each semester via an evening guest lecture. The speakers have included FIE faculty, visiting faculty from the US and key players from industry. The 2012 topic for the Sustainable Legacy of the London 2012 Olympics.

Past themes have included:

  • Sustainability: Reinventing Progress in the Downturn
  • Sustainable Cities - London

In-class discussion and a guided response paper to this lecture is a required component to FIE’s key courses.

Carbon Offsetting

To tackle the environmental impact associated with the business travel of our London-based staff, we have teamed up with ClimateCare to offset our CO2 emissions. ClimateCare makes emission offsets through renewable energy, energy efficiency, and industrial gas and waste management projects. Read more about their portfolio of projects here.
