Dublin Students Visit Irish Times

On November 9th, four FIE Dublin students visited Ireland’s national paper of record, The Irish Times. We were greeted by Paddy Smyth, Foreign Policy Editor, who spoke to the group about the history of the Irish Times and the present challenge of remaining financially viable as fewer people buy the physical newspaper. The group was then permitted to sit in on the morning news conference during which the editors of all departments discussed the content and layout of the next day’s paper. Afterwards, we were treated to a coffee and a question and answer session with Paddy Smyth in the Irish Times rooftop canteen with beautiful views over Dublin city centre. This was a wonderful opportunity providing rare insight into the workings of a daily broadsheet. We would like to extend our thanks to Paddy in particular for taking the time to welcome and speak to us.
