Extra-Curricular Activities
To show students a different side of British culture, FIE coordinates an Optional Extra Curricular Calendar of events taking place around London. The activities are subsided by FIE and are limited to availability on a first come, first serve basis.
There is always a deadline for sign-up early in the term, so students should make sure to sign up promptly, to avoid paying full price somewhere else!
A copy of the calendar with dates is provided in orientation in London.
Some typical Extra-Curricular Calendar Events
A spin on the London Eye
Experience the tallest Ferris Wheel in the world
Comedy Store Players
The most famous comedy club in London presents improvisation comedy at its best. And rightfully so – it was started at the Comedy Store in London with the likes of Mike Myers.
Sporting Events
Depending on the season and availability, students have the opportunity to see Premiership Football, Rugby or Cricket (if you can get your head around it!).
Theater
Take advantage of the opportunity to see a popular West End production or outdoor theatre production (in the summer only!).
Adventure Weekend in Wales
Students head out of London for two nights in Pembrokeshire, Wales at Britain’s only National Coastal Park. Explore the other side of the Atlantic while sea kayaking, surfing, coasteering, mountain biking and hiking along the coast. Despite the weather, this trip runs all year round and is highly recommended. Wet suit and other equipment is included, not to mention accommodation, transportation and fantastic home cooked meals.
Concerts
For students into music, London is one of the best cities to see well known artists at venues such as Wembley Arena; or a great chance to see up-and-coming bands in smaller venues such as Koko; or see British artists who might not have hit the States in venues such as Brixton Academy.
Special Extras
Cheap London
FIE provides weekly updates on activities going on around London that are CHEAP or FREE, important with today’s exchange rates. We do our best to choose the top tips, but also welcome students to share their knowledge with the Student Life Office.
FIE’s Cooking Club*
Although going out is a nice treat, the best way to stay healthy and save some cash is by staying in and cooking in the residence hall kitchens. Cookbooks are provided in the residence, but taking a class is the best way to gain confidence in the kitchen. Depending on availability of the instructor and student interest, FIE will sometimes offer a cooking class during the semester (Fall & Spring only) which takes place in a professional instructional kitchen. Students learn to cook a three course meal and take it away with them for dinner. Recipes are printed to keep for future reference.
Sample Cooking Class Menu

*The class is suitable for veggies & vegans and the instructor will work around any dietary requirements – just remember to disclose it on the sign up form.
