“Service in the City” is a form of philanthropic experiential learning based in an urban environment. The opportunities for students to make a positive contribution to London’s diverse communities are vast. Through an International Service Internship in a metropolitan city, students experience how service can contribute to lifelong learning, a sense of vocation, and choices they make in their everyday lives.

What is an International Service Internship?
International Service Internships are unique opportunities for students to engage in international work placements with a central theme of serving the London community. Unlike a traditional internship, a student’s primary focus is civic engagement and the needs of the community. However, service internships provide students studying all majors, including business-minded students, the opportunity for personal and professional growth through work that is also of value to the community.
Set in the heart of the London urban environment, service internship students have the opportunity to gain insight into possible careers, develop intercultural and professional skills, and cultivate increased personal awareness. FIE International Service Internship placements provide the platform for students to foster a deeper connection with the city of London with organizations that have the goal of achieving public good.
The International Service Internship Course (ISIC) has two components:
1. Classroom based seminars
2. Service Internship Placement
Students receive academic credit for completing the academic coursework and service internship placement. The academic course allows students the opportunity to development of civic awareness, social responsibility, and global citizenship through sharing, reflection, and analysis.
Who is it for?
Service Internships are a beneficial experience for sites and students under 25 from all majors. Service Internships are particularly valuable for students studying in fields related to the following:
- Health Sciences
- Public Affairs
- Social Welfare
- Theatre Arts
All students in the Open Enrolment semester can partake in “Service in the City” by opting in to the Service Internship pathway.
Why is it unique?
Students are awarded with a nationally-recognized UK certificate from vInspired based on hours of service (v50 = 50 hours, v100 = 100 hours) and reflection components. vInspired is the UK’s leading youth volunteering charity recognising and connecting under 25 year olds to opportunities in the local community. Students are able to proudly display this accomplishment on their résumé to further illustrate their skills and the Service Internship experience to future employers.
For students already in the process of enrolling in FIE programmes only.
