Internships with FIE and UEM in Madrid
As the business center of Spain and one of Europe’s largest cities, Madrid offers exciting internship opportunities for both Spanish- and English-speaking study abroad students. English-speaking students will have more opportunities for placement and a deeper experience if they have completed at least one semester of Spanish.
Academic Component
FIE students will participate in two lectures prior to the beginning of their internship placement, on:
- Working environment and cultural issues in Spain
- Cultural references in current affairs of Spain
Academic work includes a concluding paper reflecting on cultural experiences, the tasks and responsibilities undertaken during the placement, and behaviors and attitudes related to that particular profession. Each student’s internship site supervisor provides an evaluation of the students’ work and a certification of the number of hours completed.Students typically complete a minimum of 200 hours at the internship site and earn 6 ECTS credits.
Placement Process
Internships are supervised and monitored by a UEM faculty advisor, who works with each student to choose an appropriate company. In addition to the assistance provided by the faculty advisor, students will have access to UEM’s Career and Placement Office, which will help students create the necessary internationally standardized curriculum vitae (CV) as a part of the Europass program. The office also offers personalized and group training and advising sessions, and holds Educational Cooperation Agreements with more than 3,000 companies.

ADVERTISING COMMUNICATION
Advertising Communication is an area of creative thinkers, capable of creating, managing, coordinating, and publicizing all kinds of communication initiatives in different fields. Placements are available in communication departments, advertising and brand management companies, institutional communications offices, event organizing companies, audiovisual production companies. A creative placement will depend on the quality of your portfolio.
BUSINESS MANAGEMENT AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Interns develop creative business projects in company departments.
CHILDHOOD EDUCATION & PRIMARY EDUCATION
In 2004 the Regional Community of Madrid inaugurated its bilingual program for public schools, an ambitious project to increase the number courses taught in English in the schools. The internships are designed for students interested in bilingualism and multiculturalism who would like to teach in bilingual schools and in a multicultural environment. Students are placed in English language classrooms at public and private schools in the Community of Madrid and city of Madrid and they will serve as language and culture assistants in the classrooms. Interns prepare classroom language and cultural materials and speak English with the children.
ELECTRONIC & DIGITAL ART
Electronic and digital art combine creation and design with science and technology. The artist uses electronic and digital means of expression and communication to produce fine art. Electronic and digital art have become very popular in Spain due to the increase in cultural industries in the European Union. Placements are available in film media, studios and media producers in music, video, digital television, digital photography, digital cinema, digital publishing, development of multimedia projects, engineering, computer science. A creative internship will depend on the quality of your portfolio.
DESIGN: FASHION, INTERIOR, GRAPHIC & PRODUCT
UEM, a partner of DIMAD, Association of Designers of Madrid, provides interns the opportunity to have contact with leading professionals in design. Spain has significant links with the global fashion apparel industry due to brands like Zara and Mango becoming key players in the global market. Placements are available in design studios, publishing companies, communication companies, press, television, interactive multimedia companies, advertising agencies. Interns work in photography, web pages, publishing video clips, videogames, television, film, new formats. A creative internship will depend on the quality of your portfolio.
FINANCE
Internship placements are available in renowned financial companies and in banking organizations related to human resources, such as GREF, a financial training group. Students work in finance related projects, assessment of companies, national and international management, departments related to finance and accounting: audit firms, corporations and risk capital funds, strategic consulting firms, private banking and investment, dealers, and brokers.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Internship placements are available in multinational companies, government organizations, NGO’s, civil service organizations, counseling firms, the media, research centers and institutions, think tanks and political parties. Students have the opportunity to attend UEM workshops, such as the International Negotiation Workshop, the International Cooperation Workshop and the Current Day Observations Workshop.
JOURNALISM
Placements are available in press, radio, television and communication offices. Students also have the opportunity to participate in http://www.uemcom.es” title=“UEMCOM”>UEMCOM, UEM’s digital newspaper and radio, which will provide additional professional experience on campus.
MARKETING & COMMERCIAL MANAGEMENT
Interns work in market research and develop creative marketing projects in company departments.
MEDIA & MULTIMEDIA
Media and multimedia include specialization in 5 fields: digital environments, film, television, radio and photography. UEM offers an intensive program of internships which include projects requested by companies to be completed on campus. Internships are also available at television and radio stations. Interns develop audiovisual projects or work in visual and sound editing and post production, audiovisual events, photography, videogames, designing all aspects of audiovisual production. PERFORMING & MEDIA ARTS
Performing and Media Arts is a new degree at UEM and in Spain. UEM offers a double degree in Performing and Media Arts and Dance Science. Placements are available in theatres, on stage sets, stage and media companies, puppet theaters, street entertainment, musical industry, film and video industry, video clip industry and in specific projects led by professionals in the field.
SPORTS AND DANCE
Sports are a key economic activity in the Spanish society today. Famous Spanish sports people include Rafa Nadal, one of the greatest tennis players worldwide, Pau Gassol, NBA Los Angeles Lakers, and Fernando Alonso, the youngest world champion of Formula One. The two most successful teams in Spanish soccer history, the Real Madrid and Barcelona, are also two of the richest in the world. Spain’s national team, known as La Roja, is the champion of the 2010 World Cup. UEM leads Spain in sports research and innovation and it was the first Spanish university to offer a degree in Dance Science. UEM has a close relationship with the Real Madrid Club. Placements are available in the Spanish National Sports Council, the Spanish Olympic Committee, professional clubs and federations, sporting events companies, fitness wellness chains and multinationals, some of the principle companies in the dance world.
