Jane Smith is deputy leader at the Animal Welfare Party, and the UK’s first-ever elected animal rights councillor. In 2019 she successfully defended her seat in Alsager (Cheshire), beating all the Labour and Conservative candidates. A graduate of Angers University (France) with postgraduate degrees from Loughborough and Manchester universities, Jane is also a published author on animals and the environment whose work has most recently been short-listed for the Future Places Prize for Environmental Literature (2021) and the Van der Mey Non-Fiction Prize (2022). Jane lives in Cheshire with her family of people and rescue dogs.
